There are about 20 known Tetratheas species. These small shrubs are mainly found in New South Wales and Victoria, in well drained, mainly open, dry forests areas.
The Black-Eyed Susan (Tetratheas ericifolia) is a small, rounded, heath-like shrub, with a diameter of about 30 cm. The linear leaves of three to ten mm grow in whorls of four to six.
These lightly fragranced, deep pink magenta flowers hang like little open bells from branches hiding their black centre. One has to turn the flowers upward to see the “black eye”. Black-Eyed Susan flowers in winter to early summer.
