The flowers of the Coral Tree or Angel Tree could well be the adopted floral symbol of Los Angeles, although it is not native to California. Its bright red flowers stand out like “angels” against bare wood in winter, while its large, deep green leaves give pleasant shade in summer.

Also called the Flame Tree, Coral Tree stands solitarily, overpowering all with its beauty, but don’t try to climb it. Many of the branches have strong, sharp spikes that can inflict painful wounds. They protect the soft timber that cannot be used for building and woodwork. About 100 known species inhabit the tropics. The Australian Coral Tree, with its wide outstretched branches, grows up to 25 m high.
