Dagger Hakea
Flower Essences 15 ml
(Hakea teretifolia)
This genus, with over 140 species, grows into woody shrubs or small trees up to 3 metres high. Hakeas are very hardy. Its nut like, dagger shaped fruits stay intact until the bush dies or is damaged by fire. Then the nut splits into two, freeing the two-winged seeds. Its prickly leaves up can create an impenetrable barrier in hedges, open land and forest edges.
Its white flowers form in axillary clusters on long, straight branches during spring and summer. Although the blooms would look beautiful in flower arrangements, they remain undisturbed near settlements due to their thorny defences.
