Illawarra Flame Tree Flower Essences
(Brachychiton acerifolius)
In Australia, the Illawarra Flame tree is often planted with the Jacaranda for a spectacular display of red and purple. Thirty out of the approximately 31 species of this plant are common to Australia. The Illawarra Flame Tree grows up to 30 metres high. Its large, variably lobed leaves, to 20 cm long, resemble Papaya leaves. The Illawarra Flame Tree grows alone, and is rarely found in dense bush land.
Like the Coral Tree, it sheds most of its leaves when flowering, in late winter or early summer, covering the tree in brilliant red. It is always exciting to see this proud tree in full blaze when travelling through the Illawarra, south of Sydney, at flowering time.
