Papaya originates from the tropical Americas. Today, Papaya is cultivated in most tropical countries worldwide. This upright tree grows from three to eight metres, and under favourable conditions, even up to 10 metres.
The Papaya tree needs a partner to guarantee fertilisation. It is not yet clear how Papaya flowers fertilise but one male tree is enough to fertilise twenty-five female trees. Some believe fertilisation is aided by insects, others believe it occurs by wind.
Some trees are bisexual, with male and female flowers. The plant’s sex is only apparent when it is in flower and this only happens about a year after germination. Some Papaya plants change their sex at different times of the year - due to very hot mid-summer weather. This can also occur when the top of a male or bisexual tree is cut off.
