Stinging Tree Flower Essences
(Dendrocnide excelsa)
"No, that is a Stinging Tree,” said a worried voice behind me suddenly. I had been looking closely at a flowering Stinging Tree. When I carefully turned the leaves over for a photo, my friend warned me again of Stinging Tree’s nasty effects. Even the toughest of bushmen have a high respect for this tree.
The Gumaoma, as the Aborigines call it, grows up to 40 metres. Its dark green leaves can grow up to 30 cm across. The leaves look like giant Stinging Nettle leaves with hairs on the underside. They create such great agony at the slightest touch that you would not forget the pain in a lifetime. This torture can persist for several days. And even months after, it can cause discomfort when temperatures fluctuate, e.g. while swimming. The yellow-green, sometimes purple, flowers look like foamy grapes and are well protected under its lethal leaves.
